Update on Project Nani Flamingo 48 Gallon build.

The Rebirth of my sisters aquarium.

The day I've been waiting for, time to bake the donuts!

I started around 5pm on March 16th walking out the door with a big dream and a small budget.

First I headed over to 3rd Coast Corals to visit my new friend Brian. Checked out a few corals ,picked up some live rock and sand. When I went to pay for the items ,I said hey B,I also need some RO Saltwater,50+ gallons.
He said, "yeah I know,no charge."

Soooo that saved me about $75 ,:) think I want that doube head purple tip brancing hammer, two red and green blastos,a reverse superman montipora and some Turban snails.

I ended up pass mid night, sipping a beer on St.Patricks day.
It took about 55 gallons to fill oncee all the live rock and sand is in. Kayla helped me,we made a mess at one point. Wasted about a gallon on the floor when we took a break. My daughter is the bomb bizzo,my sister Nani would really be amazed.

Now fast forward to today.. March 30th..

The sand bed consist of 40 lbs Ocean Direct and a mix of 15 lbs of Flamingo Reef, 5 lbs Sea Floor reef Aragonite all made by Caribsea.
I also have about 15 lbs of Fuji Live rock.

Added some Galveston beach finds to give it that Gulf coast feel.

Good bye Goober.

So Goober was about to croke and the Duncan reached out and grabbed the fish by the tail. Easy lunch. What a site to see, nature taking care of business right in front of my eyes.

Smile it's Sunday!

Thanks 3rd Coast Corals!

I recently had a bout with Ich in my biocube and it cost me two fish, our Green warpaint Goby and our Royal Gamma. I was upset and started to research all I could on the internet on how to stop this plague on my nano reef.
I did water changes, started to add garlic extract to the food and prayed.

I learned that Ich is common ,but the #1 cause is stress ,the second is big changes in the temperature.

So I started to ask around to see what is an safe option for a reef tank with corals.
The #1 solution is to quarantine the sick fish and use copper based meds. That is a big no no when it comes to invertebrates such as shrimp, snails and corals,it will kill them.

So on a recent window shopping excursion with my kids ,we stopped at 3rd Coast Corals . Behind the Tinsletown 290 movie theater off of West Tidwell.

We walked in and I was amazed at the selection of exotic corals. What really blew me away were the quarantine tanks he had set up. Brain then explain to me his process, he holds all the new arrivals for 2 weeks before selling them.

Which is unique ,because most of these fish stores will only QT them for one to three days.

This is a big deal IMO.

Brian then asked me if I've heard of Kick Ich, a over the counter ICH fighter. He then filled up a bottle of Kich ich and just gave it to me. WOW... first time I've gotten anything free from a fish store. Let alone something that would cost me more than $5.

I then started the dosing for two weeks. Had to make sure we had all that crude out before I added another fish, and on top of that I wasn't going to buy fish any longer if the fish store didn't QT the stock before selling them on the floor.

So here we are 1 month later and I finally made a purchase that I'm happy with. First fish I purchased from Brain at 3rd Coast Corals.

Updated Aquascape 3/14

From my mind ,then on paper, its like my hands just knew where to place all the rocks.

Haha ,well that how my newest aquascape come to me.

I feel good about the look,it starting to look like a live reef.
As far as the bunched up corals in the middle of the tank, the Ora Purple Stylopora will be moved to the 48 gal once the tank is fully ready for it.

STR8 DOPE!!

Project 48 update

Starting to get serious about this build, next up is the lighting. I'm starting to dig the Kessil 150 LEDs.
48 inches ,so I might be able to pull it off with two.

The song hits home with this build as well.

Window shopping

On Saturday I took a ride with the family to visit a niece and made an excuse to check out a local favorite fish store of mine.
Nussied between Watonga and 34th off of Magnum, just minutes from the 290/610 split.
FJW Aquarium
This place has loads of great color full fish, flashing around showing off. Tons of crazy corals, this is a spot I've been wanting to take the family to.
I knew one experience would kick their passion for my hobby up a notch.
The first things that pop about this place are the colors.
Its all about the lighting and this place has some of the best, but the colors of the corals and fish would look amazing under any light IMO.
The shop keeper is well known and has passion not only for the business but for the hobby and it shows. Just ask him and he will tell you straight up if it makes sense. Something not all shop keepers will do that, they only want to make a buck.
